KELLEEN STRUTZ, piano
Kelleen Strutz, known simply as Kelleen, is an accomplished pianist and vocalist. Musically versatile, Kelleen masterfully integrates jazz, classical, and pop standards --reminiscent of her early influencers Carol King, Carly Simon, Nancy Wilson, and Barbara Streisand-- to create a sultry, timeless sound coined by fans and followers as Classic Fusion.
Born and raised in Valders, WI, Kelleen’s fascination with the piano began when she was 3 years old. She frequently performed with her parents and siblings at church and community events, and began intensive classical piano studies at the age of 10. Kelleen won numerous awards in local and national piano competitions, and eventually accepted a full music scholarship to Butler University in Indianapolis, IN where she earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Piano Performance.
While attending Butler, Kelleen’s musical interests expanded into vocal performance, and she began to be offered opportunities to sing around the city. Enthusiastically received by Indianapolis audiences, Kelleen made the decision to pursue music fulltime, and now enjoys performing internationally.
Kelleen released her debut CD, Simply Beautiful, featuring over 30 of Indianapolis’ finest musicians including world-renowned bassist Frank Smith and the legendary Jimmy Guilford. Simply Beautiful received high accolades from area DJs and music critics, and continues to be a holiday favorite and is available on CD Baby and iTunes.
Frequently invited to collaborate with a variety of celebrated artists, Kelleen was a featured guest vocalist on the Buselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra CD, An Old Soul. Her performance was described as “seductive and slinky” and “earthily sirenic, breathy and erotic…” and contributed to the project being cited as one of the Top 10 Recordings of 2009 by Jazziz Magazine.
Kelleen has also performed with internationally acclaimed flutists William Bennett and James Walker, and currently tours with renowned Metropolitan Opera soprano Angela Brown. In addition, she is featured at numerous charitable and civic events including The Rose Awards at the Indianapolis Convention Center, The Music, Martin, and Me at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, LotzaJazz at Washington Park, Hot Licks, Cool Chics at the Indiana History Center, The Ronald McDonald House Gala at the Indiana Roof Ballroom, and the annual Barbados Cancer Society fundraiser in honor of the late Prime Minister David Thompson. Other notable engagements include master classes in Hong Kong, soloist for Rhapsody in Blue at the Palladium of the Carmel Center for the Performing Arts, and by special invitation from the United States Embassy.
A founding member of the piano trios The Three Beats and KEY Trio, Kelleen is the featured vocalist for the band Souled Out, and performs locally, nationally, and internationally at numerous venues, festivals, and special events.
